Amorim Admits Milan Are Not Ready to Compete on Two Fronts and Warns About His Future

A first half to forget

Rúben Amorim held nothing back after AC Milan's 2-0 defeat to Ferencvaros in the Europa League. Lenny Joseph scored a brace for the visitors, who finished with 10 men after Bamidele Yusuf was sent off in the 77th minute. Milan struggled to match the pace in the first half, and goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani, starting in place of the suspended Mike Maignan, made an error that led to the first goal before his side were caught out on the counter for the second.

"There is no explanation"

"There is no explanation. There is nothing I can say, especially about the first half," Amorim told Sky Sport Italia. "We gifted opportunities, made stupid errors. We were not prepared to play football. We were not ready to go from the derby to this competition. When you play with the Milan jersey, you have a responsibility, and you cannot turn up like this." With the loss, Milan have lost three of their first four European matches of the season for only the second time in their history, after 2021-22.

"We have to improve, otherwise it's over"

Milan finished with 15 shots to Ferencvaros' 12, but only two on target compared to the visitors' eight. A half-time triple substitution, bringing on Christian Pulisic, Mario Gila and Diego Moreira, looked to have boosted them, but they were soon caught out. In his press conference, Amorim warned that his tenure could come to an early end: "I have every reason to defend the team, so when I speak like this, I take responsibility first and foremost. But we cannot afford to do something like this, in front of our fans, at our home. We have to improve, otherwise it's over."
