Académico de Viseu Make an Impressive Return to the Top Flight

Just a few months ago, Académico de Viseu were celebrating their return to Portugal's top division after 37 seasons away. Now, the newly promoted club have emerged as one of the biggest surprises in Liga Portugal.

Bruno Pinheiro's side sit sixth in the standings with 20 points from six wins, two draws, and two defeats, level with FC Arouca and ahead of clubs such as Gil Vicente and Sporting Braga.

What makes their rise even more remarkable is how quickly things have turned around. After a difficult start, Académico de Viseu put together six consecutive league victories, climbing from the bottom half of the standings into the top six.

The Winning Streak That Changed Everything

The turnaround began on Matchday 5 with a 1-0 victory over Gil Vicente. Wins against Vitória de Guimarães, Estrela da Amadora, and Estoril followed, helping Académico recover after collecting just two points from their opening four matches.

Their biggest statement came on October 25, when Pinheiro's team defeated Sporting CP 2-1 at the Estádio José Alvalade. João Guilherme scored both goals as Académico stunned one of the main contenders for the title.

A week later, the Viseu side came from behind to beat Rio Ave 2-1, with goals from Soufiane Messeguem and André Clóvis. That result extended their winning streak to six matches, a feat previously achieved by only two other newly promoted teams: Beira-Mar in 2000/01 and Estoril in 1946/47.

From Fighting for Promotion to Competing With the Best

Académico de Viseu's return began taking shape during the 2025/26 season, when the club underwent a major transformation under Sérgio Fonseca. The coach took charge in October 2025, with the team sitting 15th in Portugal's second division.

The turnaround was impressive. Académico went ten matches unbeaten and entered the final matchday with promotion in their own hands. On May 16, 2026, a goalless draw against Sporting CP B at the Estádio do Fontelo was enough to secure their return to the top flight.

For the new challenge, the club appointed Bruno Pinheiro, who has maintained a competitive core while getting the best out of players already familiar with the project. Among them is André Clóvis, the team's leading scorer with five goals in ten matches.

The Challenge of Staying in the Top Six

Despite their impressive winning streak, Académico de Viseu still have areas to improve. The team have scored 15 goals and conceded 12 in ten matches, showing their attacking ability but also some defensive weaknesses.

Their away form has been particularly important. They remain unbeaten in five matches on the road, with three wins and two draws.

For now, Académico de Viseu have already achieved far more than a quiet return to the top flight. After 37 seasons away, they sit among the top six and have put together a historic winning streak. Their next challenge will be maintaining that consistency as the season progresses.

A Return That Has Already Made History in Portugal

  • The streak: six consecutive victories, a feat previously achieved by only two other newly promoted teams.
