Who Can Stop FC Porto's Historic Start to the Season?

  • Francesco Farioli's side is rewriting the record books in Portugal, and stopping the Dragons is becoming an increasingly difficult challenge.

FC Porto is making the opening months of the 2026-27 Liga Portugal season look almost effortless. After ten rounds, Francesco Farioli's team has yet to drop a single point: ten matches, ten victories and a perfect 30 points from 30, putting the Dragons among the most impressive starters in Portuguese football history.

Their latest statement came on October 31, when Porto cruised to a 4-0 victory over Estoril at the Estádio do Dragão. Victor Froholdt opened the scoring after just four minutes before Borja Sainz, André Silva and Gabri Veiga added three more goals in the second half.

What makes Porto's run so remarkable is not simply the winning streak. The Dragons have scored 25 goals while conceding only four, a combination of attacking efficiency and defensive consistency that none of their first ten opponents has been able to overcome. Even Benfica, one of their biggest title rivals, suffered a 3-1 defeat when the teams met in September.

A Club Record 86 Years in the Making

To find the last time Porto enjoyed a start like this, you have to go all the way back to 1939-40. Under Hungarian coach Mihály Siska, the club won its first 13 league matches, a record that remains Porto's best-ever start to a domestic campaign.

The current team has now matched a ten-game opening winning streak achieved by only five other teams in the history of Portugal's top division. Farioli's side has also surpassed the eight consecutive victories recorded by Jesualdo Ferreira's Porto at the beginning of the 2007-08 season.

Three more wins would bring this team level with the club's historic benchmark. A fourth would establish a new Porto record. But before thinking that far ahead, the Dragons must overcome their next challenge: an away trip to Vitória de Guimarães on Sunday, November 8.

What Makes Farioli's Porto So Difficult to Beat?

One of Porto's greatest strengths has been its balance. While the squad boasts attacking talents such as Samu Aghehowa, Borja Sainz and Gabri Veiga, the team does not rely on a single player to deliver results. Against Estoril, for example, all four goals came from different scorers.

Defensive stability has been just as important. With Diogo Costa in goal and players such as Jan Bednarek and Jakub Kiwior anchoring the back line, Porto has conceded just four goals in ten league matches. That organization allows Farioli's players to control games without leaving themselves constantly vulnerable to counterattacks.

Yet there is an interesting contrast between Porto's domestic dominance and its European performances. While the Dragons have been unstoppable in Liga Portugal, they have suffered three consecutive defeats in the Champions League. Those results suggest there are still weaknesses to address against stronger opposition, making the difference between their domestic and European form one of Farioli's biggest challenges.

Benfica and Sporting Are Running Out of Room for Error

Porto's extraordinary run has left its biggest rivals with little margin for mistakes. Benfica entered the week with 22 points from nine matches, while Sporting CP had collected 21 from ten. Even if Benfica wins its game in hand, the chasing pack will still need Porto to start dropping points.

Other clubs have also made encouraging starts. Santa Clara, with 21 points, and Arouca, with 20, have remained close to the leading positions, although sustaining that level of performance over an entire season will be a much greater challenge.

For now, everyone is chasing the same team. There is still a long way to go in the title race, but Porto has already forced its competitors to confront an uncomfortable question: who will be the first to stop the Dragons?
