Fonseca Tells Lyon Players He's Leaving

Paulo Fonseca is closing in on a move from Lyon to Sporting CP. According to RMC Sport, the Portuguese coach informed his players on Monday that he intends to leave the French club, bringing his time in Ligue 1 closer to an unexpected end.

The news comes just hours after Olympique Lyonnais defeated Angers 2-0 on Sunday. Fonseca appeared emotional after the match, particularly when Corentin Tolisso embraced him during the celebrations.

The 53-year-old had already acknowledged the possibility of leaving when asked about Sporting's interest. Although he stopped short of confirming his departure, the developments suggest his final game in charge of Lyon may already have taken place. His current contract runs until June 2027.

Sporting CP Close In on Fonseca

The move gained momentum after Sporting CP announced that talks had begun to terminate Rui Borges' contract, with Tiago Fernandes taking temporary charge of the first team.

According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, Sporting are preparing a long-term agreement that could keep Fonseca in Lisbon until 2030. The opportunity carries particular significance for the coach, who has openly expressed his affection for the Portuguese club.

His arrival would mark a major managerial change in Liga Portugal, another competition featured on beIN SPORTS.

For Lyon, the move would also have financial implications. Although the club has been satisfied with Fonseca's work, his departure could help reduce salary expenses at a time when financial management remains a priority.

Carlos Vicens Emerges as Favorite

With Fonseca's exit approaching, Lyon have reportedly identified Carlos Vicens as their leading candidate to take over.

The 43-year-old Spanish coach is available after leaving SC Braga in October. He previously spent several years at Manchester City, including a spell working alongside Pep Guardiola.

According to A Bola, discussions involving Vicens have progressed, with Lyon attracted by his coaching philosophy and experience developing young players.

Former Juventus manager Thiago Motta has also been mentioned as a possible option. Meanwhile, L'Équipe reports that Lyon have not contacted former coach Pierre Sage about a potential return.

No appointment has been officially announced.

Lyon Face an Immediate Coaching Decision

The timing of Fonseca's expected departure leaves Lyon with little room to maneuver. The French side face Real Sociedad in the Europa League on Thursday before traveling to Brest for their next Ligue 1 fixture on Sunday.

Assistant coach Jorge Maciel has been mentioned as a possible interim replacement, although Portuguese reports also suggest he could follow Fonseca to Sporting. Much will depend on how quickly Lyon can appoint a permanent successor.

Fonseca arrived in January 2025 to replace Pierre Sage and has kept Lyon among the leading teams in French soccer. Following their victory over Angers, the club sits third in Ligue 1, just three points behind Paris Saint-Germain.

That makes the potential departure particularly significant. Lyon could lose their head coach while challenging near the top of the French league, while Sporting prepare to welcome a manager with experience across several major European competitions.

For now, Fonseca's move to Sporting CP and Lyon's search for his successor remain works in progress, with official announcements expected to clarify both situations.
