Balogun Ends His Goal Drought in France

After months of frustration, Folarin Balogun finally found the back of the net for Monaco. The American striker scored his first goal of the 2026-27 Ligue 1 season in a 3-1 defeat to Paris FC, offering a reminder of his finishing ability after a difficult start to the campaign.

Balogun came on at halftime for Paris Brunner and needed just 20 minutes to make an impact. In the 65th minute, he met a cross from Vanderson, splitting the defenders with a well-timed run before turning the ball into the net.

His goal briefly brought Monaco back into the contest after Lassine Sinayoko's two goals had given Paris FC a comfortable advantage. However, Pablo Pagis put the result beyond doubt, leaving Monaco with another defeat but at least one encouraging sign from their American forward.

A Difficult Few Months at Monaco

Balogun's season has been disrupted by injuries and uncertainty surrounding his future. Following his impressive performances at the 2026 World Cup, the striker came close to leaving AS Monaco for Everton, only for the proposed transfer to collapse on deadline day.

He ultimately remained in France, where physical setbacks and limited playing time have prevented him from establishing himself in the starting lineup. Before facing Paris FC, Balogun had made just four league appearances, all from the bench.

It is a sharp contrast to last season, when he scored 19 goals across all competitions, including an impressive run of 11 goals in 11 matches between February and May. Rediscovering that consistency will be crucial as he looks to regain his place in Monaco's attack.

The Fight to Reclaim His Starting Spot

Balogun's goal comes at an important moment as he looks to convince Monaco coach Filipe Luís that he deserves a return to the starting lineup. The American has yet to start a Ligue 1 match this season and faces competition from Paris Brunner for a place up front.

Across five league appearances, Balogun has played just 114 minutes, with his 45-minute outing against Paris FC representing his longest appearance of the campaign. Despite those limited opportunities, he made the most of his latest chance.

Monaco also desperately need attacking solutions. The club have now gone four consecutive Ligue 1 matches without a victory, making Balogun's return to scoring form a potentially valuable development as they look to turn their season around.

Will Pochettino Bring Him Back to the USMNT?

The timing of Balogun's goal could hardly be more interesting. Mauricio Pochettino is preparing to announce his next United States men's national team roster, with the November international camp scheduled to begin on November 9.

Balogun missed the previous camp because of fitness concerns and the uncertainty surrounding his situation at Monaco. Pochettino explained at the time that the striker needed to regain his physical condition and focus on playing regularly for his club.

In his absence, young forwards Julian Hall and Justin Ellis impressed with the national team, increasing competition for attacking positions. While Balogun remains one of Pochettino's leading long-term options at striker, his lack of regular minutes in France could influence the coach's decision.

His first goal of the season is a step in the right direction, but consistent playing time remains the bigger challenge. Pochettino must now decide whether Balogun has shown enough to deserve an immediate recall or would benefit from more time rebuilding his rhythm at Monaco.
