Kimi Antonelli Falls Ill Ahead of the Mexico City GP as Mercedes Takes Precautions
Kimi Antonelli missed media day ahead of the Mexico City GP, raising concerns just before a pivotal weekend in his Formula 1 career. Mercedes is awaiting updates on his return.
Kimi Antonelli was absent from media day ahead of the Formula 1 Mexico City Grand Prix, an unexpected development just before one of the most important weekends of the season.
The Mercedes driver was scheduled to speak to the press on Thursday but ultimately missed his commitments. Attention is now focused on his recovery and the possibility of returning to his duties on Friday, when on-track action gets underway.
Mercedes Reveals Why Antonelli Was Absent
The team confirmed that the Italian is suffering from a viral illness and that the FIA excused him from his media obligations as a precaution. According to Mercedes, the goal is to give him time to rest and recover ahead of the weekend.
“We expect him to be back tomorrow,” the team said, although it has not confirmed that Antonelli will miss any on-track sessions. Caution is also warranted given that the Autódromo Hermanos Rodríguez sits more than 2,200 meters above sea level, an altitude that can increase the physical demands on drivers.
Antonelli Could Make History in Mexico
The situation has drawn significant attention because Antonelli arrives as the championship leader after winning the United States Grand Prix. He currently holds a 123-point advantage over George Russell and a 124-point lead over Lewis Hamilton.
The Italian can secure his first world title by finishing ninth or higher in Mexico. If he does, he will become the youngest world champion in F1 history. Recovering in time will therefore be crucial as he prepares for a weekend that could go down in the record books.
Valtteri Bottas Also Misses Media Day
Valtteri Bottas, a Cadillac driver, was also absent from media day. His team reported that the Finnish driver was feeling unwell and clarified that the absence was a precautionary measure that would not affect his participation in the remainder of the Grand Prix at this stage.
Attention will now turn to both drivers' recovery ahead of practice. For Antonelli, the priority is to get back to full fitness and keep his hopes of clinching the championship in Mexico on track.
