Mbeumo defends players after another United defeat
Bryan Mbeumo was adamant that Manchester United's squad did not let Michael Carrick down with its display against Chelsea.
A dismal second-half showing at Stamford Bridge saw United capitulate to a 2-0 defeat, with Lisandro Martinez seeing red, leaving Carrick under even more pressure.
United is winless in nine games, its worst run since 1988, but Mbeumo, who saw a rasping strike brilliantly saved by Mike Penders late on, insisted the players did their part at Stamford Bridge.
Asked if the players had let Carrick down, Mbeumo said: "No, obviously not. I think the mentality was there right from the first minute.
"[It was] harder with 10 men. We still trust everyone. With the man down, we still had some frustrations at the end. But I think we have done everything as a team."
Mbeumo saw positives to take from United's first-half display.
"I think we did a lot of right things, especially in the first half when we could have been up," he said.
"I think in the first half we had a lot of chances, which is a positive. The last few games we didn't create a lot, but obviously they're a good team with qualities.
"What we have shown, the mentality was there. Everyone worked really hard, and we still have to find some bits at the training ground."
Defeat left United in 16th place in the Premier League, and it could even end the weekend in the bottom three.
It faces Roma in the UEFA Champions League on Wednesday (AEDT) before hosting Aston Villa in its final game prior to the next international break.
