“I Want Both to Lose!” Mourinho Fires Up Atlético vs Barcelona Clash

  • The Real Madrid coach delivered a typically provocative response when asked about the upcoming showdown between his two biggest title rivals. And he made no secret of the outcome he would love to see.

Mourinho Wants Both Rivals to Lose

José Mourinho has once again delivered a statement guaranteed to make headlines. Ahead of Real Madrid's meeting with Valencia, the Portuguese coach was asked about the upcoming showdown between Atlético Madrid and Barcelona, two of his biggest rivals in the title race.

His response was as blunt as it was entertaining: “I'd like both to lose,” Mourinho said during his press conference at Ciudad Real Madrid. It is an impossible outcome, of course, but one that perfectly captures what the Portuguese manager would prefer.

Mourinho wasn't particularly concerned about which team might benefit from the result. At least one of Real Madrid's title rivals is guaranteed to drop points, presenting an opportunity for Los Blancos to close the gap.

An Opportunity for Real Madrid

The meeting between Atlético Madrid and Barcelona is one of the biggest fixtures of the LaLiga season. Both clubs are ahead of Real Madrid in the standings, making their direct confrontation particularly significant for Mourinho's side.

“It's very easy for me because someone will drop points,” Mourinho explained, recalling how all three clubs had won their previous league matches. This time, at least one of his rivals will have to settle for fewer than three points.

For Real Madrid, the situation could hardly be more appealing. A victory of their own, combined with points dropped by Atlético, Barcelona, or both, would help them gain ground in the title race.

Mourinho Wants to Stop Chasing Games

Beyond the results of their rivals, Mourinho has identified an issue within his own team: Real Madrid have been forced to come from behind too often, something the Portuguese manager wants to change.

He acknowledged that recent comebacks have shown positive qualities, including belief, team spirit, and the strength of his substitutes. However, he also believes those performances have exposed weaknesses that must be addressed if Madrid want to become more consistent.

Mourinho pointed to the 3-0 victory over Racing Santander as the example his players should follow. Madrid controlled that match from the opening stages and could have scored even more goals before halftime. That is the level of authority he wants to see on a regular basis.

Madrid Must Take Advantage of Their Rivals

While Mourinho clearly sees an opportunity in the Atlético vs Barcelona clash, Real Madrid must first take care of their own business against Valencia.

The Portuguese coach knows his team cannot afford another slow start. With their title rivals guaranteed to take points off each other, dropping points themselves would mean wasting a valuable opportunity to close the gap.

Mourinho cannot have both Atlético and Barcelona lose, but he can count on at least one of them dropping points. Whether Real Madrid benefit from that result will depend on their own performance.

Mourinho's Comments and the Title Race

  • His wish: Mourinho wants both Atlético Madrid and Barcelona to lose.
  • The opportunity: at least one of Real Madrid's title rivals will drop points.
  • Madrid's challenge: Mourinho wants more consistent starts after several comeback victories.
